Health Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The quest for a healthier lifestyle remains an unending journey for many. Among the many options, one humble ingredient stands tall – extra virgin olive oil, commonly referred to as EVOO.

This liquid gold has been treasured for centuries not only for its rich flavor, but also for its numerous health benefits. So, let’s dive into the world of extra virgin olive oil and explore how this magical elixir can pave the way to a healthier happier you.

The Legacy of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Dating back to ancient civilizations, olive oil has a remarkable history. The Mediterranean region has long been celebrated for its healthful diets, and extra virgin olive oil has been at the heart of this region for thousands of years. Renowned for its heart-friendly properties, it’s no surprise that people in this region enjoy longer life expectancies and lower rates of cardiovascular diseases.

Extra virgin olive oil is extracted from the fruit of the olive tree, without the use of heat or chemicals, in a process known as cold-pressing. Extra virgin olive oil boasts an impressive nutritional profile, making it a must-have in any health-conscious kitchen.

Nutritional Riches of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil is not just a delicious addition to your meals, it’s a powerhouse of nutrients that can boost your overall well-being.

The primary reason behind its health benefits lies in its composition. Rich in polyphenols and monounsaturated fats, extra virgin olive oil supports heart health by lowering bad cholesterol levels, while preserving good cholesterol. EVOO’s antioxidants shield your body against the damaging effects of free radicals, helping to prevent chronic diseases and cancers.

Cardiovascular Health

If your heart had a wish list, extra virgin olive oil would be at the top. The monounsaturated fats in extra virgin olive oil are known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. By lowering LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels, extra virgin olive oil helps to ensure that your arteries remain clear and your heart pumps easily and steadily.

The anti-inflammatory properties of extra virgin olive oil further aid in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, reducing the strain on your heart and vascular systems.

Elevating Your Meals with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a novice in the kitchen, extra virgin olive oil’s versatility makes it a perfect ingredient for culinary exploration. Drizzle it over salads, sauté vegetables, or use it as a dip for fresh breads, extra virgin olive oil can transform a simple dish into a masterpiece. Its distinct flavors range from mild to robust, depending on the olive varieties and harvest times. EVOO can elevate your dishes while contributing to your health.

Cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil from Morocco stands tall among high quality oils from Spain, Italy, Greece and other Mediterranean regions. When it comes to flavor, low acidity and bitterness, you get what you pay for. High quality extra virgin olive oil comes at a premium price.

If you wish to save money when purchasing extra virgin olive oil, you stand a good chance of buying an oil that has high acidity, unusual bitterness, low health benefits and may include other base oils that are not derived from olives.

Olive Oil in Beauty Regimens

Extra virgin olive oil’s goodness isn’t confined to the kitchen. For centuries, it has been a cherished beauty secret. Its moisturizing and antioxidant properties make it an ideal natural tonic for nurturing your skin. Unlike cosmetics and cremes that use many chemicals, extra virgin olive oil is growing in popularity as a natural substitute for many skincare products.

Massaging a few drops of extra virgin olive oil onto your skin can lock in moisture, leaving it soft and supple. Additionally, EVOO can be used as a gentle makeup remover or as a hair conditioner, adding shine and vitality to your locks. It can condition your scalp and aid in promoting hair growth.

Incorporating Olive Oil into Your Diet

Choose cold pressed extra virgin olive oil to enjoy the rich flavor and maximum nutritional benefits of the olive fruit. Use it to sauté or stir-fry vegetables, drizzle it over salads and leafy greens, make a marinade for meats and fish or use it to make a simple salad dressing. It can also be used in baking to add a unique touch of flavor to breads, cakes and other baked dishes. Use it as a dip for your favorite fresh breads or as a finishing touch drizzled over cooked meats and fish.

While the virtues of extra virgin olive oil are undeniable, moderation remains key. Although it’s a healthier alternative to most cooking oils, EVOO is calorie-dense, so be mindful of your daily intake. To keep it fresh and tasty, store it away from light and heat in a tightly closed container to preserve its freshness and health benefits. Try to use an opened bottle within about six months. Unopened bottles can be stored for about two years from the date of harvest listed on the label.

Since I drink about two tablespoons per day, storage is not a problem. It’s on my bathroom sink and I drink about one tablespoon in the morning and one tablespoon at night. I purchase 750ml bottles and drink it straight within about three weeks, not allowing enough time for the oil to go bad. By the time the bottle is almost empty, I have already ordered a new one.

I found a plastic one ounce shot glass that has measurements delineated on it. It makes the process of pouring and drinking olive oil quick and accurate. There are many similar glass versions to choose from as well, but plastic is safer than glass in an oily environment. A full one ounce shot glass equates to two tablespoons.

Embracing a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, the most effective remedies are rooted in tradition and natural ingredients. Extra virgin olive oil’s journey from ancient civilizations to modern kitchens is a testament to its enduring value. With its heart-friendly properties, antioxidant richness, and culinary charm, extra virgin olive oil isn’t just an ingredient – it’s a celebration of wellness and the power of nature.

So, go ahead, drizzle, dip, drink and savor the golden elixir that is extra virgin olive oil. Your heart, skin, body and taste buds will thank you for it! Remember that incorporating olive oil into your life is a flavorful journey. It’s about making mindful healthy choices that lead to a balanced and healthy body. So, as you embark on the adventure of embracing wellness with extra virgin olive oil, remember that small changes can yield big results.

Atlas EVOO, from Morocco, is my go-to extra virgin olive oil, and I drink it daily. If you purchase Atlas EVOO or any other product through this site, we make a small commission from Amazon at no additional cost to you.

In my opinion, the best extra virgin olive oil is Morocco Gold, but it comes at a premium price. Atlas is similar to Morocco Gold, however it is competitively priced, and fits my budget better as a daily drinking EVOO.

I sincerely hope that you have fun finding your favorite EVOO. Remember that you get what you pay for, meaning, most high-quality extra virgin olive oils are not bargain priced.
