Polyphenols

Polyphenols are a group of naturally occurring compounds found in plants. They are characterized by having multiple phenol (aromatic) rings and play a significant role in plant growth, development, and defense against various environmental stressors.

Polyphenols are widely distributed in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, tea, coffee, red wine, and other plant-based foods.

Polyphenols are known for their potential health benefits due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can contribute to various diseases and aging.

Additionally, polyphenols have been studied for their potential to support cardiovascular health, improve blood sugar regulation, and enhance overall well-being.

Different types of polyphenols include flavonoids (such as flavanols, flavones, flavanones, and anthocyanins), phenolic acids (such as caffeic acid and ferulic acid), and other compounds like resveratrol and lignans. The specific health benefits and effects of polyphenols can vary depending on the type of polyphenol and the foods in which they are found.

It’s important to note that while the polyphenols in olive oil offer potential health benefits, they are just one component of a balanced diet and should be consumed as part of a nutrient-rich diet that includes leafy greens.
